Veterinary Acupuncture

What animals do you treat?

Acupuncture is used to treat a wide range of animals and there is evidence that, in China, it has been used to treat animals for over 2000 years.  I treat pets, primarily dogs and cats.

What is involved in a treatment?

The first consultation involves quite a lengthy discussion about the pet, covering not only the presenting problem, but also all aspects of the pet's health, any past medical problems, diet, behaviour etc.

Depending on the size and nature of the pet, treatment is then carried out either on a rug on the floor or, in the case of smaller pets, on the owner's lap or on a sofa or table. Throughout the treatment the pet should be given lots of attention by the owner.

Treatment involves the insertion of fine stainless steel needles into acupuncture points. Needles are usually left in place for about 10 minutes, although some points may require just a very quick in and out stimulation.

If acceptable to the owner and pet, treatments usually finish with the pet being given a treat!

How do the animals react?

After the initial surprise of the first treatment, most dogs react very well to acupuncture. They are usually aware of the insertion of needles, but once inserted they seem to be fairly oblivious of their presence and just enjoy all the concentrated attention they are receiving from the acupuncturist and their owner. Some dogs fall asleep with the needles in.

Cats can be more of a challenge, primarily because they don't like to be kept still, but cats who are used to a lot of handling, or sitting on laps, usually tolerate acupuncture very well.
